Estonia

Estonia regained independence in 1991. During the fifty years of Soviet rule, Estonia the idea of the so-called „full equality” between women and men. Gender roles and gender inequalities were no topic for debates, and violence against women, even though widely present, was a taboo.

It was only in 2001, that the first survey on violence against women was conducted. The results suggested that nearly 41,000 women are injured each year because of domestic violence, a truly alarming figure, given that Estonia’s population is only about 1.3 million.
